USW Members Visit United Way Charities to Gain Better Perspective

Today Members participated in a volunteer event organized by Citgo Petroleum Corp and United Way of Will County. Members delivered bedding supplies to both the Daybreak Center and The Guardian Angels Community Services. Both of these organizations offered a detailed look into the programs and services they offer to our communities, allowing us a chance to see the good work that is down for the real people of our shared communities.

Daybreak Shelter is an incredible organization providing emergency housing and food for men, woman, and children who find themselves in dire circumstances.  The men and woman working for Daybreak provide not only a safe space for people, but offer career workshops, help in job hunts, job skills and education, and tutoring for the youth that find themselves at this facility.

We also had the opportunity to visit the great people of Guardian Angel Community Services. While Daybreak Shelter provides the most basics of needs, The Guardian Angels provide even more specialized support. At the Home they specialize in providing resources and programs for those who are victims of abuse of all ages. They serve thousands of victims yearly and help rebuild homes following such traumatic experiences.

Following these great facilities, we were honored to meet the leadership of Cornerstone Services. Cornerstone is for disabled adults to, in part, help them find jobs in the community by both teaching the client valuable skills and by advocating for the individual with the potential employer. The fine people of Cornerstone offer themselves as boot on the ground resource to help facilitated the independence of adults who otherwise my not have it.

This experience represents just a small portion of the charities that United Way helps support and fund yearly. All three fall into the overall philosophy of community health that United Way believes in. These beliefs include the overall health and safety of our community’s families, strong working individuals, and togetherness to help pick up those that have fallen on hard times.
