Local Union News

The 44th Annual Children's Christmas Party was a huge success this year with lots of happy kids enjoying gifts, snacks and of course, Santa!

2022 has brought several changes to USW Local 6500 with the retirement of three of our full-time Local Union Representatives.  Financial Secretary Norm Rivard in February, and in May, Treasurer Todd McLeod and WSIB Representative Ken Hill.

The Executive and Membership wish Norm, Todd, and Ken the very best in their retirement and we thank them for their tireless dedication to our brothers and sisters.

We are pleased to welcome Leo Bigras as the new Financial Secretary, Eric Delparte as Treasurer, and Sean Staddon in the role of WSIB Representative.  See attached photos...

We have received a request from Sarah Colton, a graduate student at Laurentian University, who is conducting her thesis under Dr.Josée Turcotte and Dr. Bruce Oddson.  They are running an online research project investigating job fit and satisfaction and are looking for Northern Ontario workers to complete the survey.

At the current time, they have an excess of management worker responses and they are looking for a more accurate picture by encouraging workers to complete the survey.

The United Steelworkers (USW) International Executive Board issued the following statement today in response to Russia’s continuing attack on Ukraine:

“The USW stands in international solidarity with the Ukrainian people as they withstand deadly and unprovoked violence by Russian forces. Their bravery serves as an inspiration to everyone who fights on the side of democracy and freedom.

“As we seek to end this baseless war, we join with the global trade union movement in condemning the violence against Ukrainian citizens, including our Ukrainian union siblings.

Once again this year, Diane MacDonald will be offering income tax preparation services to USW Local 6500 members and retirees.  See poster below for more information.
