Local Union News

Thank you to members, retirees and friends who joined us to celebrate our 60th year as a chartered Local Union. We hope you enjoy these photos from the event.  Here's to 60 more!

"In the early morning hours of May 9, 2002, a huge explosion ripped through the Westray coal mine in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.  In a matter of seconds, the lives of 26 miners were extinguished.  It marked one of the worst workplace disasters in Canada in generations" – usw.ca

2022 has brought several changes to USW Local 6500 with the retirement of three of our full-time Local Union Representatives.  Financial Secretary Norm Rivard in February, and in May, Treasurer Todd McLeod and WSIB Representative Ken Hill.

The Executive and Membership wish Norm, Todd, and Ken the very best in their retirement and we thank them for their tireless dedication to our brothers and sisters.

We are pleased to welcome Leo Bigras as the new Financial Secretary, Eric Delparte as Treasurer, and Sean Staddon in the role of WSIB Representative.  See attached photos...

We have received a request from Sarah Colton, a graduate student at Laurentian University, who is conducting her thesis under Dr.Josée Turcotte and Dr. Bruce Oddson.  They are running an online research project investigating job fit and satisfaction and are looking for Northern Ontario workers to complete the survey.

At the current time, they have an excess of management worker responses and they are looking for a more accurate picture by encouraging workers to complete the survey.
