USW Local 1944 members commemorated the Day of Mourning on April 28. The pandemic is affecting our lives in many ways, bringing along anxiety and burnout. A good way to shake off the negativity is to join one of the Pride events organized this year, some of them will be virtual. This issue also features the Steelworkers Humanity Fund’s report for 2019 and information on scholarships for 2020.

As indicted in a previous update, we have been notified by the International that pre-arbitration hearing discussions have begun. We have a conference call scheduled for mid-June to determine how the arbitration will take place, either via video conference or in person. We have made Duneland Falls available to accommodate this arbitration considering traditional venues are not fully operational at this time.

After numerous meetings with Plate Mill management we have identified a considerable amount of work which can be performed by our Members in a safe and efficient manner. This development has reduced the Company’s list of potentially displaced Employees by half.  In addition, those who have voluntarily moved their vacations, have helped lessen the number of potentially impacted employees for the upcoming temporary reduction in workforce during the Plate Mill outage. The Company has stated this outage should not last more than one week and we expect everyone to be recalled upon completion. If you are unsure how to apply for Unemployment Benefits and you have questions, please call the Hall. We are here to help you work through any issues you may have with the process.

We will see a minimal number of people recalled next week and the Company will continue to adjust the Labor Pool by seniority. We continue to chase contractors out around the plant. If you see contractors in your area, please let your Griever know or call the Hall. I am confident that our Executive Board and Grievance Committeemen will continue to work diligently to answer any questions and protect our work during these turbulent times.

The tentative reopening for GM is June 1st, however they continue to struggle with a shortage of parts to quickly ramp up production. As the automotive industry continues to reopen at a cautious and manageable rate, we expect to see gradual positive signs for our industry as well.

During times of uncertainty, solidarity is often tested. I am very proud of the way our Local is sticking together and looking out for one another.  As Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

    In Solidarity,
    Pete Trinidad Sr.
    USW Local 6787 President
