April 17, 2020 - USW Local 1944 is committed to assisting members with tuition relief through 7 scholarship opportunities to children of union members graduating from high school. Every year, the Local Union offers 3 educational scholarships of $750 and 4 scholarships of $1,000 for any post-secondary public institution.
Requirements
The following requirements must be met:
Applicants must be children of active members of USW Local 1944. “Children” includes biological or birth children, children by adoption, and children by other, equivalent relationship.
Applicants must be graduating from high school in 2020.
Applicants must be registering for courses at a public post-secondary institution.
Their Grade 12 transcripts or a copy of their latest Grade 12 report card,
And a letter of reference from a teacher or an employer, OR a letter written by someone who is not a family member who can attest to your character and work ethic.
This scholarship program considers leadership values and labour knowledge.

Le 17 avril 2020 - La Section locale 1944 du Syndicat des Métallos a à cœur d’aider les membres à payer les frais de scolarité de leurs enfants complétant leur dernière année d’études secondaires par le biais de 7 bourses d’études. Chaque année, la Section locale 1944 offre 3 bourses de 750 $ et 4 bourses de 1 000 $ aux enfants de membres pour leur inscription à tout établissement postsecondaire.
Conditions d’admissibilité
Les conditions d’admissibilité suivantes doivent être respectées :
Le candidat doit être l’enfant d’un membre actif de la Section locale 1944 des Métallos. Le mot « enfant » comprend les enfants biologiques ou par naissance, les enfants par adoption et les enfants d’une autre relation équivalente.
Le candidat doit terminer sa dernière année d’études secondaires en 2020.
Le candidat doit être inscrit à des cours dans un établissement public d’études postsecondaires.
Documents requis
Les candidat(e)s doivent fournir les documents suivants :
Leurs relevés de notes de dernière année de secondaire ou une copie de leur dernier bulletin scolaire de dernière année de secondaire,
Et une lettre de référence de la part d’un enseignant ou employeur, OU une lettre rédigée par une personne n’étant pas un membre de la famille et pouvant attester du caractère et de l’éthique de travail du (de la) candidat(e).
Ce programme de bourses d’études prend en compte les valeurs de leadership des candidat(e)s ainsi que leur connaissance du milieu syndical.

While negotiations of a Layoff Minimization Plan are ongoing, we have submitted our Layoff Minimization Plan to the Company. Unfortunately, the Company has chosen to implement their LMP without a Union agreement in place. The Company has stated business conditions have brought them to this decision. We will continue to keep lines of communication open with Management to discuss the LMP and other issues.
While negotiations of a Layoff Minimization Plan are ongoing, we have submitted our Layoff Minimization Plan to the Company. Employees who are affected by a layoff should apply for unemployment per the packet which will be given to you by Human Resources.
