March 11, 2020 - Following the three previous Share Hope campaigns that were organized in December 2017, August 2018 and November 2018, Unit 51 in Burnaby is organizing another Share Hope action this month.

“From now until March 31st, our Share Hope initiative will benefit the Period Promise Campaign by United Way,” said Elana Felty, from Unit 51. “You can be a part of the solution in several ways; give financially, or donate products like tampons, pads, cups, and menstrual underwear. However you choose to participate, you can reduce vulnerability and isolation caused by period poverty.”

    Why Period Promise?

The United Way of the Lower Mainland started this initiative in 2017, to collect and distribute donated menstrual products for people in need under the name Tampon Tuesday. Now operating locally under the name Period Promise, organizers and supporters continue to collect and distribute donations while advocating for free menstrual products in common spaces. USW Local 1944 Unit 51 has been onboard since the start in 2017, collecting and donating.

“Upon returning from the ‘Unions and the Community’ course at the CLC Winter School, I was motivated and ready to bring the Period Promise initiative back to Unit 51, and launch it yet again,” said Elana Felty, from Unit 51. “We want to help to end the stigma. Menstruation products are a basic necessity, but if you’re living in poverty, it can be challenging to get them. Together, we can help people live with the dignity we all deserve, creating healthier, more caring and inclusive communities. This is local love in action.”

    How you can help

Unit 51 will be collecting donations, either feminine hygiene products or monetary donations. There are 2 donation boxes:

    • Central drop off at USW Local 1944 Head Office, at 5261 Lane Street, Burnaby, BC
    • Under the union board in the TV lounge at 4535 Canada Way, 4th floor, Burnaby, BC

If you are outside of the Lower Mainland, you can still support this campaign through making an e-transfer.

Please contact Elana Felty for questions, or monetary donation by e-transfer, or to arrange donations pick-up within the Lower Mainland: [email protected]

    RE: COMPANY CONFERENCE CALL

On MARCH 6, 2020 at 9:00 am, Briggs & Stratton held a Strategic Repositioning Conference Call. The Company announced that its new focus would be on four areas: Residential Engines, Vanguard Commercial Engines, Standby Power Generators, and the new Vanguard Commercial Battery Systems.

The Company further announced that it would be divesting from turf products, including: Ferris, Billy Goat, Simplicity, Snapper, and Snapper Pro Brands, as well as Pressure Washers and Portable Generators, which are assembled at the Burleigh Plant. The Company is hoping to find a buyer for these brands by Fiscal 2021.

The Union has requested a meeting with the company immediately to discuss the impact this will have on our hourly workforce in Milwaukee.
