March 6, 2020 - Your Bargaining Team would like to thank the membership for their participation in the Bargaining Survey.

The Committee was able to meet March 3, 4 and 5, 2020 to review your vision of what is important to you. Your feedback has been essential in developing our opening proposals. Throughout this process we will be taking your voice to the employer. Your Bargaining Team will present proposals that represent a desire to secure a fair and respectful Collective Agreement.

Our focus has been, and will always be, on protecting our membership and their families.  We are keenly aware that Shaw will always be looking out for what they believe is in their best interest, not yours. This was all too evident in the last round of bargaining with Vancouver and Surrey in 2018. Shaw’s antics, messaging and attempted scare tactics rallied our members to stand together and present Shaw with a 98% Strike Vote.

Shaw’s antics, messaging and attempted scare tactics rallied our members to stand together and present Shaw with a 98% Strike Vote.

Due directly to the solidarity that was demonstrated by the membership in 2018, we were able to secure an agreement that provided additional jurisdiction and annual wage increases. We are looking forward to a renewed agreement with Abbotsford that will also balance wages and job security for you.

Shaw continues to be an extremely profitable company in spite of the competitive environment, and that is in large part, because of the work you do. We will continue to provide fair and honest updates throughout the bargaining process.

First of all, thank you to all those who were able to attend the Winter Meetings in Gaylord and Cleveland this year. The meetings were well attended and created positive discussion and suggestions. One item that we wanted to cover but forget to mention is the USW's Free College Benefit. This benefit is for all USW members and their immediate family. The education is offered online through Eastern Gateway in Ohio and applies to 2 year Associate's Degrees. To learn more click the link here  https://freecollege.usw.org/ [1], or visit the International's website at www.usw.org [2] and select the "For Members" section. This is a great resource offered through our union and we hope our members are able to utilize it.

March 5, 2020 - Sisters, brothers, and friends,

On Thursday, February 20, 2020, we heard Darren Entwistle, Chief Executive Officer of Telus, speak at the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) hearings against legislation enhancing Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs). We, the workers at Telus, understand his concern regarding the introduction of MVNOs that would be allowed to lease capacity from existing facilities-based carriers and then sell the service to retail customers. After all, it is companies such as Telus that have invested heavily in building and maintaining their networks. The MVNOs would avoid these expenditures and risks, yet would be allowed to profit from them.

In whatever legislation and regulation the federal government establishes, fairness and Canadian jobs need to be the dominant consideration.

As workers at Telus, we are also concerned that during Mr. Entwistle’s policy argument he made direct threats to our jobs. At the end of the CRTC hearings he indicated that if the changes being proposed were implemented, Telus could cut 5,000 Canadian jobs over the next five years.

Mr. Entwistle went further, on Tuesday, March 3, when he held a mandatory telephone town hall meeting with thousands of Telus employees including members of our USW Local 1944 and threatened massive layoffs.

We feel like pawns in Mr. Entwistle’s regulatory and political game.

In the call, he praised the amazingly talented people who work for Telus: the talented engineers, coders, technologists, technicians and others. Yet in the same breath, he threatened massive job cuts, including the 3,500 jobs in the Burnaby, B.C., call centre, because of possible CRTC changes and government interference.

The fact is, however, that Telus is a hugely profitable Canadian company that returns millions of dollars to its investors. Telus also continues to buy up smaller communications companies to grow its presence in the industry. And yet over the last five years it has already cut over 3,700 jobs just in our bargaining unit. These were job cuts from a massively profitable corporation without the existence or threat of MVNOs. Our members want to know why our praiseworthy work resulting in big profits doesn’t result in secure and good jobs.

We have never been given an answer as to where all these jobs have gone. It’s time for Telus to stop using its “...

    Solidairement,

La Section locale 1944 du Syndicat des Métallos
