We are the United Steelworkers, North America’s largest industrial union. We’re 1.2 million members and retirees strong in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. We proudly represent men and women who work in nearly every industry there is.
At the December union meeting there was some discussion about this letter that we received alerting us to changes made to the calculation of our SPT (Steelworkers Pension Trust) benefits. This information shows how our Benefit Accrual Rate was changed in order to *maintain* our monthly payout rate after retirement. This is due to the new increased Contribution Rate from the 2018 contract.
-
Simply put... *we did not lose any money for retirement*. this only reflects the new calculations to *maintain* the same monthly payout rate.
The facts are as follows: 50% of Canadians will be personally affected by cancer at least once over the course of their lives. That means cancer will impact 50% of our coworkers and friends' health in our workplaces. Considering these statistics, Local 1944 believes cancer research is also a union issue.

“I believe that helping cancer research is an integral part of our Local Union’s missions. Everyone in our Local will be affected or has been somehow by cancer. Because it affects entire workplaces, it’s very important that the Local gets involved with these campaigns. Some cancers are caused by the workplace; that is why companies have a huge responsibility regarding the disease. Every worker has the right to work in a healthy environment that includes protection against certain types of cancer. Next year, I plan to register as a Rider.” — /Juanita West, Local Union Representative for Alberta/

This sounds a little more formal than it is - everyone has expertise! Subject Area Experts are just people who want to think deeper about a specific topic in the contract and help generate proposal language. They work in small groups and whatever they come up with is given directly to the bargaining committee. If needed, the bargaining committee may ask for specific assistance or research on the topic at hand. If you are thoughtful, detailed, or just have a pet issue grinding your gears, this is the role for you! Volunteer at the bottom of this page!
Subject Area Expert Tables will occur during the:
Monthly General Members Meeting
TUES Sept 10th @ 1pm
Hilltop Public Library (5 minutes from casino)
511 S Hague Ave. 43204
Volunteers will be contacted shortly before this meeting if specific preparations are required. Otherwise just bring your personal notes and thoughts!
Do you like talking to your coworkers? Do you want to be the first in the know? Join our CATeam!
The CATeam exists to reach members in every department, sharing information and getting feedback during bargaining. CATeam members:
Check in with workers in their area, and make sure everyone has the latest information about bargaining developments
Take note of questions and feedback to send back to the bargaining committee
Recruit members to participate in solidarity activities (such as a sticker day) and make sure everyone has their materials
Your activities happen while you are already at work. Items like flyers are distributed in non-work areas during non-work times, like breaks, meals, and before/after shift
Department specific meetings started in early 2019 and will continue through September. They last an hour, and give us the opportunity to talk about specific issues in our areas and ask questions in a smaller setting. See the schedule to confirm your department's meeting!
All meetings occur on Tuesdays at the Westland Area Library - 4740 W Broad St. 43228
This is just past the 270 and 70 interchange, behind the Rooster's restaurant
