The David Podworny Memorial Scholarship [3], valued at $1,000 per year, is intended for those studying or planning to study Telecommunications Trades & Labour Studies at accredited public institutions in BC (Canada) or Washington State (USA).

Chaque année, la Section locale 1944 des Métallos offre trois bourses de 750 $ et quatre bourses de 1 000 $ pour leur inscription à tout établissement postsecondaire aux enfants de membres complétant leur dernière année d’études secondaires.
Les candidats doivent répondre aux exigences suivantes :
Être l’enfant d’un membre actif de la Section locale 1944 des Métallos ;
Terminer sa dernière année d’études secondaires en 2019 ;
Être inscrit à des cours dans un établissement public d’études postsecondaires.
Les candidat(e)s doivent compléter le formulaire de demande de bourse d’études (document en anglais uniquement) et soumettre leur dernier relevé de notes, ainsi qu’une lettre de référence de la part d’un enseignant ou employeur. Ce programme de bourses d’études prend en compte les valeurs de leadership des candidats ainsi que leurs connaissances du milieu syndical.
La bourse commémorative David Podworny, d’une valeur de 1 000 dollars par an, est destinée aux personnes qui étudient ou envisagent d’étudier les métiers des télécommunications ou le monde du travail dans des établissements publics agréés en Colombie-Britannique (Canada) ou dans l’État de Washington (États-Unis).
Les candidats doivent satisfaire aux exigences suivantes :
Avoir entre 20 et 60 ans ;
Résider en Colombie-Britannique ;
S’inscrire ou être inscrit dans un programme d’études relatif aux métiers des télécommunications ou dans un programme d’études du monde du travail (Labour Studies Program) dans des établissements publics agréés au Canada ou aux États-Unis.
Les candidats doivent remplir le formulaire de candidature (document en anglais seulement) et fournir une lettre de recommandation d’un représentant syndical, d’un mentor ou d’un instructeur.

Every year, USW Local 1944 offers three educational scholarships of $750 and four scholarships of $1,000 for any post-secondary institution, to children of union members graduating from high school.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
Be a child of an active member of USW Local 1944;
Be graduating from high school in 2019;
Be registering for courses at a public post-secondary institution.

On July 15, 2019, Leo W. Gerard has retired as the International President of our great union - a role he's had for 18 years. Proudly born and raised in Sudbury, Ontario, Leo rose through the ranks of USW Local 6500, worked as a Staff Representative, then continued on to become USW District 6 Director, Canadian National Director, International Secretary-Treasurer and International President.
Fellow Canadian Carol Landry has also retired as the International Vice President at Large. She is the first-ever woman on the United Steelworkers union International Executive Board, serving since 2008.
