December 4, 2018 - The USW is pleased to work with Local 1944 to offer Shop Steward Level 1 courses in Montreal and Rimouski. The rescheduled Montreal course will now be held March 25–26, 2019 and the rescheduled Rimouski course will be held March 28–29, 2019.
Specific venue details will be released to participants closer to the course. We recommend that you register as soon as possible since courses tend to fill up quickly. If you previously registered for the Montreal or Rimouski course earlier this fall, you will receive an email from Milena Kollay with new details to book your Union Time Off (UTO). There is no need to apply again.
This two-day course focuses on the steward’s role as educator and advocate, as well as concentrating on the grievance procedure. The basic core of the course examines the grievance process in its entirety. A comprehensive list of subjects is included in the manual (everything from duty to represent, conflict resolution skills to accommodation issues, etc. are addressed), and students are able to choose, within the time limitations, the issues they would like to focus on. The information binder has been designed for participants to take home and utilize as a reference manual to assist them with a variety of workplace issues.
If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Steve McWhirter at [email protected].
The negotiation committee has met with the hospital administration for the fourth time. We have been discussing non-economic language to improve the language that we already have in the contract. We have brought to light a lot of the issues that we have been having in the hospital that were expressed from the membership. We will be meeting again next week and I will give you all an update. Thank you.

We have brought to light a lot of the issues that we have been having in the hospital that were expressed from the membership. Here are some of the issues that we have been deliberating over: floating, staffing and acuity, paid leave, education, paid time off, meal and rest periods. We will be meeting again next week and I will give you all an update. Thank you.
