We are the United Steelworkers, North America’s largest industrial union. We’re 1.2 million members and retirees strong in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. We proudly represent men and women who work in nearly every industry there is.
Our union held a fundraising rummage sale at the Duluth Labor Temple on Sept. 29. We raised money for a United Way program through which our union buys holiday presents for struggling families.
A big thank you to all of the members who donated materials to sell, who stopped by to buy stuff, and who volunteered to put the vent on.
The event was so successful, we are looking to make it an annual event!
Adam Ritscher, Vice President of Local 9460 will be on site and available to meet with anyone face to face to talk about any issues you may have. Feel to stop by after your shift or on your break. We are hoping to hold these on-site walk-in meetings twice a month. Check the union bulletin boards or our website for future meeting dates! And as always, feel free to call or email our office with your questions if you prefer.

In September I went to the Charley Richardson Educational Institute. This was my second year in the program, and the theme was “Building Your Skills as a Union Leader.”
My two amazing instructors were Nancy Lessin and John Lepley. They walked us through how important health and safety is in the workplace, and how paying attention to those kind of issues is an important way to strengthen our union. They shared ideas for how to deal with changes in the workplace. And they also instructed us on how to be better at communicating. We were put into small groups to practice our news skills, as well as to allow us to share experiences and information.
I want to thank everyone for giving me this wonderful opportunity to develop my union leadership skills. ~Michelle Johnson
This was my 4th year at the Ruttger’s conference. The theme of year four is arbitration. I found it very interesting to learn about cases where the burden of proof falls on the company side. At the end of the week we had to put on a mock arbitration in front of all of the other students. We got a script to go by and then each side had to build a case. I was on the company side. At the end of the mock arbitration our side didn’t get a clear cut win, but it wasn’t a complete loss either. The arbitrator ruled for the union side, but stated that the employee would only get one more chance. Which can happen in real cases.
I found it a very worthwhile and realistic training, and I highly recommend Ruttger’s. ~Brenda Simon
October 16, 2018 - The 2018 Ontario municipal and school board elections will be held on Monday, October 22, 2018.

If you are either a resident of the municipality or property owner or tenant during a specified time just before the election.
In order to be able to cast a ballot in a municipal council or school board election, your name needs to be on the voters’ list as an elector. Find out if you are on the voters’ list.
Workers in Ontario are entitled to 3 hours of voting time
On October 22, every worker in Ontario is allowed to be absent for 3 hours of voting time, during voting hours – however, this does not mean you can take 3 hours off work, and your employer may decide when it would be most convenient for you to be absent in order to vote.
Steelworker values are progressive values, guiding the fight for workers’ rights. This is why USW Local 1944 asks our members to support Steelworkers who are running for municipal office in their wards:
