DENNIS WENT ON HOLIDAY TO TORREMOLINOS, SPAIN AND STAYED IN A CHEAP HOTEL. THE REASON IT WAS CHEAP WAS BECAUSE HE HAD TO MAKE HIS OWN BED. THEY GAVE HIM A HAMMER AND NAILS TO DO THAT.

October 5, 2018 - The 2018 Municipal Elections in British Columbia are now underway. We encourage all Local 1944 members to vote for labour-friendly candidates. Please check with your local District Labour Council for a list of endorsed candidates in your region.

These elections are being held for municipal councils (Mayors, Councillors), regional district electoral areas (Electoral Area Directors, Local Community Commissioners), boards of education (Board of Education Trustees), specified parks boards (Park Board Members, Commissioners), and local community commissions (Regional Trustees, Islands Trust Local Trustees). Every municipality is slightly different, so please refer to your voting card that you received in the mail.

Municipal voting will take place on Saturday, October 20, from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm across British Columbia. Many municipalities offer advance voting opportunities. Please refer to your voting card for voting locations and information.

Click here to see the full list of candidates seeking election across BC.

Steelworkers need your support in this election!

There are several Steelworkers running in the 2018 Municipal Elections across British Columbia:

    • Allan Wong, from USW Local 1944, is running as Trustee for the Vancouver School Board (www.votevision.ca/allan_wong_sch)
    • Nancy McCurrach, from USW Local 1944, is running for Port Coquitlam City Council (http://nancy4portcoquitlam.ca).
    • Brad West, Communications and Political Action Coordinator at the USW District 3 office, is running for Mayor of Port Coquitlam (http://bradwest.ca)
    • Barbara Junker for City Council of Port Moody (www.facebook.com/BarbaraJunkerforPortMoody)
    • Ron Corbeil for City Council of Port Alberni
    • Gary Wong for School Board of Burnaby
    • Neal Menard for Mayor of Merritt
    • Frank Everitt for City Council of Prince George
    • George Doubt, former TWU President, for City Council of Powell River

Your vote can have an impact in your community!

Municipal elections are the most direct way for citizens to influence their local government and the communities that they live in. Steelworkers can make a difference by voting. Every vote counts.

USW Local 1944 encourages our members to support progressive candidates who will defend workers’ rights. Please vote on an advance voting day or on October 20, 2018.

    In Solidarity,

    USW Local 1944
