We are the United Steelworkers, North America’s largest industrial union. We’re 1.2 million members and retirees strong in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. We proudly represent men and women who work in nearly every industry there is.
You made it clear that we were not going to accept 2-tier wages for new hires, that we needed progress on WAGE JUSTICE in the IE, and that we deserved more than 1%.
In response, we joined together like never before, in unity and solidarity, and showed the world that we were willing to do whatever it took to get a fair contract. Because of your efforts, not only did KP take back their outrageous, 2-tier proposal, we also WON wage increases, progress on wage justice in the IE, and much, much more!
Your union leaders are recommending that we vote YES on this contract. You may attend one of our presentations that are catered to provide a more in-depth understanding of our tentative agreements. These sessions are not mandatory to vote, but it is strongly recommended you attend.
If you would like to attend a presentation please click on one of the options below that works best for your schedule. COVID guidelines will be strongly enforced so please come prepared to vote with a mask on and your work badge so we can verify your membership. These sessions will last anywhere from 30-45 minutes for those who have questions or want to learn about the agreements.
Last Monday I went to meet with managers from Canadian Tire and L’Équipeur at Marché Central.
The goal was to sensitize them to the fact that part of the production of clothing sold at L’Équipeur stores (owned by Canadian Tire) takes place in Bangladesh, done by people who do not even receive a living wage that would permit them to see to the basic needs of their families in terms of food, lodging, water, electricity, healthcare, education, transportation and savings.
A living wage is a human right.
A woman working at an entry-level job at a factory commissioned by L’Équipeur or Canadian Tire makes as little as $120 per month (about $1,440 per year). At that rate, it would take her 25 years to earn what CEO Greg Hicks makes in two weeks.
