Today the Alliance released a new analysis of KP’s two-tier wage proposal. If implemented, the KP proposal would see newly-hired USW mobility techs, housekeeping attendants, and dietary aides in the Inland Empire earning less than California minimum wage! KP’s proposed two-tier system would only make the wage injustice in the Inland Empire worse.

“This is a very difficult time for these workers, their families and co-workers, and our thoughts are with them,” said Nick Larochelle, president of USW Local 6500, which represents most Totten Mine employees, including 30 of the 39 trapped workers.

“Fortunately, no one has been physically injured in this incident. However, this is a very stressful and anxious time for the workers and their loved ones. Every effort is being made to ensure everyone is brought back to surface safely and as quickly as possible,” Larochelle said.

Avec ces temps d’attente, certains membres ont ressenti le besoin de retourner au travail avant la date de fin de leur congé de maladie, souvent parce qu’ils sont incertains quant à l’issue de l’appel et parce qu’ils ne reçoivent pas de salaire.

The Union is seeing an increase in grievances regarding denial of Short Term Disability claims. As we know, the appeal process can in some cases take considerable time. With these wait times, some members have felt the need to return to work prior to their medical leave end date since they are often unsure of the appeal outcome, and are not receiving pay.
We would like to advise members that they also have an option to apply for Employment Insurance – sickness benefits while they await the decision of either the initial Short Term Disability claim or the appeal.
Please keep in mind that if you are successful in your Short Term Disability claim any monies you received from Employment Insurance will have to be paid back.
Please contact your Local Union Representative if you need assistance.
Throughout our contract negotiations, KP has made outrageous demands. Management is refusing to act as an equal partner by proposing below market wage increases to frontline workers who put their lives and their families at risk throughout the pandemic.

Our USW Local leadership has decided to immediately pause Partnership. Everything is at stake. The health care giant is not taking the partnership seriously. We are fighting for safe staffing, wages and benefits that reflect our standards of care and quality employees, and equal pay for equal work. KP continues to pursue its harmful priority of costs over quality and insists on dividing the workforce. See the copy of our letter to management here. https://usw7600.ink/partPause [1]
