7:29pmCaro created Message de la Présidente à l'occasion du décès du Représentant de la Section locale Joe BennLe 9 septembre 2021 - C'est avec une immense tristesse et le cœur brisé que je vous informe que le Représentant de la Section locale 1944 du Syndicat des Métallos, Joe Benn, est décédé il y a peu de temps. Sa sœur Sue le tenait fermement au moment où il nous a quittés. Ayant subi un accident vasculaire cérébral catastrophique tôt le matin du samedi 4 septembre dernier, et n'ayant aucune chance de se rétablir, Joe est maintenant débranché des appareils qui le maintenait en vie.
Joe Benn desservait les unités 207, 208 et 214 dans le nord de l'Alberta et était au service de nos membres albertains en tant que Représentant de la Section locale depuis 2012. Avant son mandat en tant que Représentant, Joe était un militant de longue date de la base, de la Section locale 207 du STT à Edmonton.
J'ai rencontré Joe en 2000 et travaillé en étroite collaboration avec lui jusqu'en 2005, nous passions ensemble des jours et des nuits qui semblaient sans fin alors nous siégions tous les deux au comité de négociation du STT-Telus, et nous étions depuis les meilleurs amis du monde. Nous étions comme Frick et Frack, la où l'un allait l'autre y allait aussi. Nous nous soutenions toujours contre vents et marées. Il me manquera tous les jours de ma vie.
Que ce soit son engagement pour la justice, ses collègues, l'équipe de négociation, ses amis, sa famille et ses mentors, Joe s'est révélé être une personne qui exprimait ses sentiments et portait une grande attention aux autres.
Cependant, Joe était plus que mon ami, il était aussi un ami précieux pour tout le personnel de la Section locale 1944, et un formidable défenseur apprécié par les membres qu'il représentait. Nous avons non seulement perdu quelqu'un à qui nous tenons profondément, mais aussi un allié solide dans notre lutte collective pour la justice au travail. Il était un fervent partisan de Rachel Notley et du NPD.
Si être un syndicaliste signifie sacrifier ses propres besoins à ceux de ses confrères et consœurs, alors Joe était un vrai syndicaliste, car je sais combien il a sacrifié pour ce syndicat, pour vous, au cours de ses nombreuses années de militantisme. Qu'il repose dans sa force.

September 9, 2021 - It is with immense sadness and a broken heart that I inform you that USW Local Representative Joe Benn passed away just a short time ago. His sister Sue held him tight as he left us behind. Having suffered a catastrophic stroke in the early morning last Saturday September 4th, and having no chance of recovery, Joe has now been taken off life support.
Joe Benn had been servicing Units 207, 208 and 214 in northern Alberta, and has serviced our Alberta membership as a Local Representative since 2012. Prior to his tenure as a Rep, Joe had been a long-time rank-and file activist, hailing from TWU Local 207 Edmonton Clerical.
I met and worked very closely with Joe from 2000 through 2005, spending days and nights together seemingly without end when we both served on the TWU-Telus Bargaining Committee, and we have been the best of friends ever since. We were like Frick and Frack, where one went so did the other. Always having each other’s backs through thick and thin. I will miss him every day of my life.
Whether it was his commitment to justice, to his coworkers, to the bargaining team, to his friends, family and mentors, Joe revealed himself to be someone who wore their feelings and cares loudly and brightly.
Joe was more than my friend though, he was a treasured friend to the entire Local 1944 staff, and a superb and valued advocate for the members he represented. We have lost someone that we not only deeply care for, but also a strong ally in our collective struggle for justice at work. He was fierce supporter of Rachel Notley and the NDP.
If being a Unionist means sacrificing your own needs for those of your brothers and sisters, then Joe was a true Unionist, as I know very well that he has sacrificed a lot for this Union, for you, over his many years of activism. May he rest in power.
