We are the United Steelworkers, North America’s largest industrial union. We’re 1.2 million members and retirees strong in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. We proudly represent men and women who work in nearly every industry there is.
All drivers of vehicles over 5000kg are required to complete National Safety Code (NSC) driver’s training.
The NSC sets out rules regarding driving of large commercial vehicles for the country, regardless of the province in which you work/reside.
Under NSC rules, drivers are limited to the number of hours per day that they can work and drive. They are further limited to the number of days in a row they can work before they are required to take time off.
Please see the link below for clarification of the rules around duty cycle and time off.
As a reminder, with regard to those techs being sent to the Salmon Arm area for a fibre build, TELUS has declared that the entire shift will be considered driving time for the purpose of logging hours.
TELUS has traditionally directed that all drivers are on Duty Cycle One (a 7 day cycle with a maximum of 70 hours of work followed by a minimum 36 hours off duty) where team members work 5 on and 2 off, or in the case of the compressed work week, 4 on 3 off. If you are on a schedule that has you working something other than a standard 5 day work week, you must speak to your manager about the need to change to Duty Cycle 2. (a 14 day cycle with a maximum of 120 hours of work followed by a minimum 72 hours off duty)
Under NSC drivers are required to complete the necessary log/paperwork to show their hours of on duty and off duty. Failure to have the proper paperwork completed rests with the driver and can result in being ordered off duty.
If you have any questions, please contact the Union office.
