ExxonMobil has chosen to place our community at risk by operating the Beaumont refinery without its highly-trained union workforce when they chose to lockout 650 hourly workers represented by USW Local 13-243.

Skilled and experienced union workers know the risks at the refinery and blending/packaging plant, and we all remember the explosion and fire at TPC in Port Neches at the end of 2019 – injuries, evacuations, sheltering in place, environmental damage and other consequences.

Flaring takes place when burning off flammable gas during unplanned events and abnormal unit operations.  This can cause internal fires and, in a worst-case scenario, an explosion.  Essential workers who have been locked out by ExxonMobil have been forced to stand outside the gates and just watch as they witness flaring.

How much longer will ExxonMobil choose to put our community at risk?  It’s time for ExxonMobil to end the lockout and bargain a fair contract which returns skilled workers to the job. For more information call 409-842-3952.

ExxonMobil made $2.7 billion in just the first three months of 2021.  Rather than negotiate a fair contract with the women and men who helped make those profits, the company chose on May 1 to lockout 650 families represented by USW Local 13-243 in Beaumont, Texas.

Our skilled and experienced union members worked through hurricanes, floods and freezes to keep the refinery and blending and packaging plant operating.  Now, management has thrown essential workers out on the street.

But this is not just an attack on safety and security for oil workers.  It’s an assault on living standards across our community.  ExxonMobil’s lockout means that oilworkers are losing millions and millions of dollars in wages, money which is spent at local businesses, donated to charity and paid back in taxes.

When ExxonMobil deprives us of our hard-earned wages, all of our community-based businesses feel the impact.  Local shops will ring up fewer sales.  The restaurants where our families celebrate birthdays and anniversaries will see empty tables.  Reduced tax payments will mean that public services and schools will see holes in their budgets.

It’s time for ExxonMobil to do the right thing by ending the lockout and negotiating a fair contract which puts our community back to work. For more information call 409-842-3952.

PITTSBURGH – The United Steelworkers (USW) said that ExxonMobil (NYSE: XOM) shareholders yesterday approved a resolution introduced by the USW and seven co-filers calling for the company to disclose which organizations it supports for lobbying efforts, a necessary step in providing greater worker safety and corporate accountability.

“Shareholders face a dark money blind spot when the company fails to disclose its trade association payments used for lobbying, especially when these lobbying efforts contradict with ExxonMobil’s public position,” said Ricky Brooks, a member of USW Local 13-2001 who introduced the resolution. “Disclosure of the company’s payments to trade associations and social welfare groups that influence public policies will allow shareholders to assess the company’s management of risks.”

Brooks, representing the USW ExxonMobil union council, challenged ExxonMobil for discretely backing a number of organizations and positions that were inconsistent with their stated goals , including supporting the Western States Petroleum Association, which has sued the state of California to stop a program that would make oil refineries safer.

Additionally, during the shareholder meeting, the union challenged the company’s position on important issues, including its unfair labor practice lockout of some 660 union members in Beaumont, Texas.

Locked-out members of USW Local 13-243, who reported for work and were turned away by ExxonMobil on May 1, 2021, were joined by workers from ExxonMobil’s Baytown, Texas, facility for a demonstration outside of the company’s offices in Irving during yesterday’s annual meeting, during which shareholders also voted in two new board members from Engine No. 1, an activist investing firm.

USW District 13 Director Ruben Garza credited solidarity and the USW’s allies, including the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME), Boston Walden Trust and the Interfaith Center on Corporate Responsibility (ICCR), for the victorious shareholder resolution campaign.

“ExxonMobil may think it picked a fight with a few hundred USW members in Beaumont, but the company’s mistaken,” Garza said. “With the full power of the labor movement supporting us and the investing public paying close attention, we are absolutely dedicated to holding management accountable on all fronts.”

The USW represents 850,000 workers employed in metals, mining, pulp and paper, rubber, chemicals, glass, auto supply and the energy-producing industries, along with a growing number of workers in health care, public sector, higher education, tech and service occupations.

Thank you to everyone who wore stickers in support of the union negotiating committee! Today, Essentia responded to the union's economic proposals. They proposed a 1.75% raise for year, a .75% raise for year two and a .75% raise for year three. I'm sure you all would agree with us that that is NOT a fair raise for all of the hard work and sacrifices that we've all put in over the past couple of years. We'll be back at negotiations this Thursday. Stay tuned.
