    More on Trisha coming soon.
    +
My name is Trisha Garcia, but most people call me Trish. I'm one of this year's Next Generation Co-Chairs, as well as a Trustee on USW Local 8599's Executive Board. As the youngest member of the Executive Board, I proudly represent our Next Gen. I am the first Next Gen member to be elected since our committee began and I know I won't be the last. I'm also a Next Gen organizer, former flyer creater, and part of the community outreach and social media teams. I started with Fontana Unified School District in 2014 as a School Site Aide, Substitute Teacher's Aide, and now Intermediate Clerk Typist at North Tamarind Elementary. Go Cougars! What I enjoy most about my job is helping others. The other committees I'm currently on are Legislation & Education, Civil Rights, and Women of Steel. I'm also a delegate for the Inland Empire Labor Council. I enjoy volunteering in my free time because I want to know that I've made a positive difference in the world. I love to read inspirational books, travel (They also call me Tour Guide Barbie), watch my favorite teams play, and add to my Wonder Woman & Peanuts collections. Two quotes that I live by are:"A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives." -Jackie Robinson"True wealth is not measured in money or status or power. It is measured in the legacy we leave behind for those we love and those we inspire." -Cesar Chavez

    +
My name is Robert de Jonge. I'm the Inside Guard for USW Local 8599. My hometown is West Covina, CA. I currently work for Fontana Unified School District in the Warehouse. I've worked for the district for 23 years. What I love most about my job is the long lasting friendships I've built over the years. All of the people are practically family. One thing I can't live without is coffee. A hobby I have is that I like to go camping with my wife and grandchildren. I like to eat home cooked meals. My dream vacation is to go to Spain and Portugal. If I had to choose between a flying car, moon city, or robot housekeeper, I'd want a robot housekeeper.

    More on Carlos coming soon
    +
My name is Carlos Garcia. I was born and raised in Fontana, CA. I am a son, grandson, and nephew of Kaiser Steel blood. Along with many other friends and family, my family traveled from Colorado leaving the farm in 1955 to Fontana to work the steel mill. My parents and siblings are Fohi graduates. I attended Live Oak Elementary, Randall Pepper Elementary, Fontana Middle, and Citrus High Continuation. I began my journey working for Fontana Unified School District as a student worker beginning at Fohi assisting the custodial staff, librarian assistant, and mailroom from 14 years of age until I graduated. Then I began working as a sub mail carrier, sub warehouse worker, and food service driver for three years. During this time, I also attended Chaffey College working on earning an A.A. in Correctional Science. I was hired in the Mail Room as a permanent employee, and promoted to warehouse driver in 2013. I was elected as Trustee of our union in 2012. I would say my inspiration comes from my mom who was a single mother of four. She juggled keeping food on the table,  clothes on our backs, and attending Chaffey College to become a correctional officer, all to make a better life for her kids. I was taught at an early age to fight for those who can't fight for themselves. The words she told me while I was growing up inspired me as well. She would tell me, "Watch and learn," and "Why can't you?" The first time I said I couldn't do something I was taught there's nothing you can't do. My favorite place to eat no longer exists, Mazzulli's Pizza. My hobbies are collecting memorabilia such as fast food statues and collectibles.

Swearing in of the newly elected Officers

On Thursday, April 22nd, the Local conducted the Election of Local Union Officers and Unit Officials. On Tuesday, May 25, the Local Union officers took their positions for a three-year term. Local 1944 Executive Board members were sworn-in via Zoom videoconference. Congratulations to all Executive Board members!

Present for the Swearing-In Ceremony were Ken Neumann, USW National Director for Canada, Omero Landi, former Local 1944 Administrator, Jayson Little and Randy Gatzka, Staff Representatives.

“I am profoundly humbled to have been entrusted with the honour of being your President,” said Donna Hokiro. “I will work tirelessly to represent all members, every day. I will show up every day with fierceness and determination to make your working lives easier and better. Congratulations to our new Vice President Pierre-Luc Dick, and to all of our newly elected Trustees, Ross Brown, Jenn Turner, and Natasha Aodan. Additionally to all those who have been acclaimed: Michael Phillips for Secretary-Treasurer; Corey Mandryk and Alina Gherghinoiu, REOs for British Columbia; Richard Blais, Michelle Ravary, and Robert Briza, REOs for Alberta, Ontario, and Quebec respectively. I look forward to working together as we head into this next round of bargaining to secure gains for the membership. There is nothing we can’t accomplish when we collectively put our minds to it and our shoulders to the wheel.”

The Local is out of Administration

We have the pleasure to announce that as of May 25, 2021, the Local is no longer under Administration

At the request of the 2018 Executive Board, Local 1944 was first placed under administration on June 12, 2018, to ensure a fair and transparent conclusion to the 2018 Local Union Elections and the protests that stemmed from it, as well as to allow the recently-merged Local to stabilize and thrive within the USW structure. District Coordinator from District 6 Ron Wyatt was appointed by the USW International as Administrator at the time. Omero Landi, Toronto Area Coordinator of USW District 6, took on the position in 2019.

Administration provided a stable footing by which the Local was able to have its By-Laws amended, gain a sustainable financial position, improve legal representation and grievance handling, and achieve progress in many other respects.

“It has been my pleasure to have been the USW Administrator for Local 1944 since October 2019,” said former Local 1944 Administrator Omero Landi. “During this time, I have worked closely with the Local Table Officers and the rest of the Executive Board. Under their leadership, I have...
