This issue features a message from Secretary-Treasurer Michael Phillips on how the Covid-19 crisis has revealed character. He challenges every member to try to find the energy and time to fight back against employer pressurization. Now is the time to show we can depend on each other by participating in the Union’s campaigns and to #RiseUp for justice at work.

In preparing for the upcoming round of bargaining with Telus, we compiled some facts about the company to which members at Telus will be able to refer in a few months from now, just in case their employer would try to resort to economic or financial excuses to justify delaying the signature of an improved collective agreement. Follow the bargaining updates at https://1944.fyi/bu-telus2021 and contact your bargaining committee at [email protected]. Show your support on social media using the hashtags #RiseUp and #usw1944. Telus employees: Did you take the Reality Check survey yet? Your participation will be kept confidential and will demonstrate for all to see what we really think of our employer.

Members from Unit 60 Shaw Abbotsford are still fighting for a renewed and improved collective agreement. They gathered for a practice picket rally on February 3rd and once again, showed their strength and unity as a group, and expressed full support to their bargaining team. Members throughout the country are encouraged to show solidarity using the hashtag #NoFear on social media.

Our local union will be holding elections for all of our officers this April (President, Vice President, Recording Secretary, Financial Secretary, Treasuer, Outer Guard, Inner Guard, Guide, 3 Trustees, Unit Presidents, etc.).  Ordinarily we hold physical meetings where members can come and nomiate who they would like to run for what office (and people can nominate themselves as well).  But due to the pandemic, we are unable to hold such in-person meetings.  So instead we are going to be conducting nominations (as well as the elections overall) through the mail.  We have just mailed out instructions for how the nominations process will work this year.  We are posting here that same information.  Read it over, and if you have anyone you'd like to nominate, follow the instructions for how to mail them to our Recording Secretary.  At a later date, you will also be receiving a mailing with the formal elections notice, and the election ballots.  Let us know if you have any questions!

In a joint agreement to promote Health and Safety and to encourage our members to get vaccinated against Covid 19, the Union and company are allowing members to take up to 3 preventative healthcare days as follows:

If a member provides documentation to Human Resources prior to their appointment to be vaccinated, they will be allowed up to 1 day of no point/no pay following the 1st vaccine if symptoms occur and 2 days of no point/no pay following the 2nd vaccine if symptoms occur. If the member does not suffer any symptoms they should report to work as normal. If members are suffering side effects they should call the attendance line (414-247-3344) stating that their absence is for preventative healthcare due to side effects of the Covid vaccine and that Human Resources was notified of their appointment.

Please reach out to to a Union Officer or Steward if you have questions.
