We are the United Steelworkers, North America’s largest industrial union. We’re 1.2 million members and retirees strong in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. We proudly represent men and women who work in nearly every industry there is.
We previously notified Long Beach Memorial that we wanted to return to the bargaining table ASAP in order to obtain a well-deserved fair and equitable contract. Memorial’s representatives claimed they only had 3.5 hours available for us today to hear our members serious concerns with their last unacceptable proposal to the members. Very disappointing.
We presented a list of proposals developed from your valuable input during our meetings. Our proposals are designed to protect your benefits, increase wages, provide hazard & Covid 19 pay, and improve your access to Union trained shop stewards when issues arise on the job.
Memorial did not accept or agree with any of our proposals today; stating that they were ‘disappointed’ to see us demanding such improvements. Nonetheless, we remain committed and ask you to remind your supervisor that you deserve respect from LBMMC management.
Unions typically negotiate pay increases that are retroactive to the date of the prior expiration date when negotiations go beyond the term of the contract. Of particular irritation has been LBMMC’s refusal to providing any pay for the time that has elapsed since our last contract period expired. LBMMC takes the position that, while they had money to pay tiny increases on April 16, 2020, they are going to punish their union members for seeking to negotiate better wages that the crumbs LBMMC wanted to tie around our necks like a ship’s anchor. This is ludicrous and unacceptable!
We do valuable, critical, hard work at LBMMC. We sacrifice in the care we provide the community and we will all work together in unity and with solidarity until LBMMC management recognizes our tireless and dangerous work - by agreeing to a fair and just labor contract.
We will be resuming the negotiations soon and will keep you posted as to progress.
Please continue to stay healthy, safe and united during these times.
In Unity from Your USW Local 2801 Negotiating Committee Bridgette Perry, Ana Figueroa, Milton Lomas & the Team from the USW Int’l Union
Thanks to all of you who completed the 2021 USW / Telus Bargaining Survey. There was massive participation, more than double what we have seen for any other survey conducted in the past several years! In particular, we heard a lot of feedback that members appreciated the depth of questions about your work experience and bargaining priorities, and the many opportunities to provide open-ended feedback.
Two Executive Board members plus a rank and file member are spending last week and this week sifting through all the results, analyzing and summarizing them. Those Board members are Regional Executive Officer Ontario Michelle Ravary, Trustee Ross Brown, and member Louise Banville respectively. They will then be presenting their report to the USW / Telus Bargaining Committee on January 18th, and the Bargaining Committee will meet that entire week.
Thanks again for your participation in letting your Bargaining Committee know what your priorities are. The Bargaining Committee will be depending on your united actions throughout the bargaining process to help us all get a better Collective Agreement.
Our Local Union is forming a Communication and Action Team (CAT) to share information, get feedback from our members and plan solidarity activities. Our goal is to have CAT Members on every shift and every area.
CAT Members will get information from the Bargaining Committee and make sure it reaches all of our members. They will also take your feedback and questions back to the Bargaining Committee.
CAT Members serve as a link between our Local Union Leaders and our Members. Through the CAT we will aim to share important updates about bargaining and Local Union activities.
The CAT Team is made up of volunteers who want to help build solidarity in our Local Union. Most CAT Team activities will happen at work. If you’re interested in getting involved, fill out the form by clicking here or contact a Local Union Leader.
On Behalf of: Valery Robinson USW Local 7600 President.
USW local 7600 members have been working hard and our leadership team has been working hard for you during this surge! Since the month of December, USW local 7600 has won:
A Guaranteed PSP Bonus Payout, paid in March 2021
An extension to COVID-19 benefits, including sick leave and childcare benefits through the first quarter of this year
Extra Shift Incentives for Respiratory Care Practitioners, Phlebotomists, and all LVNs (Inpatient, Outpatient, Newborn Hearing Coordinators, retail and HH/ Hospice/ Palliative Care)
Workers who sign up for and are needed to work additional shifts for which they do not regularly work will receive an additional bonus depending on the length and type of shift
There is no time to celebrate these successes because we know IT IS NOT ENOUGH! All of our members are putting their lives and their family’s lives at risk by coming to work every day. It is not just those who provide care to patients who have borne the brunt of this pandemic. All USW members at Kaiser have made sacrifices and everyone deserves to be recognized for going above and beyond. We are working outside, in COVID tents, putting our lives at risk. We are working extra shifts to ensure our patients are taken care of. We are maintaining our facilities clean and we are willing to change work locations/job duties to ensure Kaiser remains the best place to receive care.
We have been flexible with Kaiser responding to the surge. Our PSP reflects the work we normally perform each year and it is not enough! Kaiser refers to us as healthcare heroes. It is time for Kaiser to respond to our request to recognize all workers, not just those in the hospital.
We are not giving up until all workers receive the incentive they deserve!
Stay tuned for more information and sign up for text updates to learn how you can let Kaiser know that all USW workers deserve recognition for the work they do!
