We are the United Steelworkers, North America’s largest industrial union. We’re 1.2 million members and retirees strong in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. We proudly represent men and women who work in nearly every industry there is.
In response to some members' concerns regarding the Company's new Mask Mandate policy your Union had a conversation with our Staff Representative and Legal Council for the Local. We have been assured that the request by the company is legal under the A.D.A and we have bargained to reach an agreement with the company on the Mandate.
A medical exemption must state:
1) A statement from a doctor that you cannot wear a mask 2) The medical reason you cannot wear a mask ( the specific medical condition does not have to be listed but the impediment to your well being must be stated i.e. restricted breathing) 3) If you are able to wear a face shield as a substitute for a mask
The new policy will be in effect for all Bargaining Unit and salaried employees of Strattec. All employees must wear a mask (or face shield if given a medical exemption) if they are within 6 feet of another person. If employees are working alone or in an office, face coverings will only be required when another person enters the area or if they leave their area.
1. The policy will be effective Monday November 2nd instead of Monday October 26th. This will give those members who need to obtain a medical exemption sufficient time to get it.
2. You should be able to get an exemption if you have a pre-existing condition at no cost by calling your doctor. If for any reason you are asked to pay for a note and/or forced to have a visit and you have a pre-existing condition, report your issue to HR and the Union for help resolving the issue prior to agreeing to pay the medical expense.
3. If you cannot wear a mask due to a certified medical condition you must also certify if you can or cannot wear a face shield. If you are able to wear a face shield the company will provide you with one as they do with cloth masks.
The Union shares the company's concern with the increased cases of COVID in Wisconsin and reminds everyone that we need to do our part to keep ourselves and others safe during this pandemic. We will continue to work jointly with the company to update policies fairly to our members that help ensure everyone stays as safe and healthy as possible. If you have other concerns please feel free to reach out to a Steward or Bargaining Committee Member.
