All social distancing and CDC Guidelines are bring followed including wearing masks and liminiting the number of people permitted in the hall.  Please be aware that some people may be asked to wait outside due to the numbers.  However, a question and answer session will be available after the general meeting to accomadate everyone that has any questions or concerns.  Once the general meeting is over and people exit, we will let people in from the outside that were waiting.  Again this will be done by following all the guidlines and numbers set by the CDC.

Labor Day is a time to recognize the battles fought by those before us to secure safety, fair wages, respect, and dignity in the workplace. USW Local 5000 recognizes the effort put in by its membership in recent times, especially with respect to the many successes during the latest bargaining agreement negotiations, but also to those who put in the long hours not only to support our nations infrastructure and economy but also to support their families back home. The nature of our work is especially demanding given the nature of being away from home for months at a time, and it is important to recognize the work that we all do - never forget, this holiday is about you - the backbone of our nation and the driving force behind the companies that employ us.

It is also appropriate to recognize the work and support of those who keep USW Local 5000, as well as the International running smoothly. We recognize Tom Zidek, our Business Agent, for the many hours of work he has and continues to put into the day to day administrative work of our Local Union. Without his tremendous help and support over the last number of years, we cannot say for certain what Local 5000 would look like today. We recognize the tremendous support we get from Jamie Walker, our International Staff Representative, for keeping us up to date with Union business as well as making connections with different USW staff to help us move forward with a number of projects. Our Executive Board continues to develop in its role as the guiding hand of the local union, the Ship's Chairmen who dutifully provide face-to-face shipboard Union representation, several of our own who left work to sit at the negotiation table during the last round of negotiations for the shipping companies, and this year those who will sit at the table for SISCO negotiations, and so many more who provide the strength and support for USW and USW Local 5000.

Thank all of you for everything you do, and have a safe and Happy Labor Day.

Members and Retirees of Local 5328

    Good evening all.

Good news! Some call backs for next week!

Monday is a statutory holiday. There is a posting indicating who is required to work.

CEWS. The company has applied for period 5 that ended Aug 1. We are now in period 7 and the company has not asked if we wanted to participate in periods 6 and 7. The unfortunate part to CEWS is the government has this set up backwards. The company can’t apply for a period until that period is over. That creates a problem for the worker as we need to apply for EI or CERB and then to find out a month or so later the company was accepted to the CEWS.

Changing times! We are all experiencing the managements changes! What I’ll ask you all is to be careful when talking to management! Do not use profanity or improper language as they consider that insubordination and are suspension happy!!  Anything you say to any supervisor is communicated to senior management! ANYTHING!!

Refusing to do your job can be considered insubordination, unless you feel it’s unsafe! If you do, immediately put in a work refusal and contact a Health and Safety rep!

Labour Day. If you would like to participate in support of front line workers,  We will be convening at the union hall for 9:30. Driving to the 3 area hospitals then to Mountainview park. Sandwiches and drinks will be provided. All info in the attachment.

Have a great and safe long weekend!!

    In Solidarity,

    Anthony Ciaramella
    President
    USW Local 5328
