July 28, 2020 - Members of the Women of Steel Committee have been working on a series of four Special Publications addressing common mental health issues, including burnout. They will be releasing one publication each month. All four publications are inter-linked and ready now if you wish to read ahead for further information.

Two different formats have been developed so that members can read the publications either on a computer or on a smartphone. The links below allow for a selection of your preferred device.

The first publication is now available online:

Women of Steel Committee Special Publication #1
    Burnout, Anxiety, Stress and Depression
    Laptop | Smartphone

“A recent membership survey shows a large number of members are struggling and reporting diminished mental health. Some members struggle with isolation or newly-altered working conditions/expectations, many with unrealistic performance demands, most with emotional customer interactions. All of which is increasing feelings of uncertainty, anxiety and potentially burnout. The Women of Steel Committee believes these special publications will be of benefit to members,” said Denise Chisholm, Chair of the WOS committee. “Mental Health and or Burnout can affect everyone: you, a Brother or Sister in the workplace, a family member, a friend. Being informed may help members recognize the signs and symptoms, and hopefully, enable access to resources and or treatment at the right time for themselves or be able to help those around in need.”

These communication pieces have been created in the spirit of education and empowerment.

    In Solidarity,

Women of Steel USW Local 1944 Committee

Vice President Brown Testifies on Behalf of USW Members on Lessons from COVID-19 on Trade, Manufacturing and Critical Supply Chains

Vice President Roxanne Brown today testified on behalf of USW members before the the U.S. House Committee on Ways and Means' Trade Subcommittee. The hearing was on “Trade, Manufacturing, and Critical Supply Chains: Lessons from COVID-19.” You can read her testimony below.

Click here to download a copy of her full testimony as a PDF.

    Read her full testimony below:

Chairman Blumenauer, Ranking Member Buchanan, members of the subcommittee, my name is Roxanne Brown, and I am honored to serve as International Vice President At Large for the United Steelworkers union. I appreciate the opportunity to join you all again today and our union’s International President, Tom Conway, sends his regards.

    Introduction

The United Steelworkers is the largest industrial union in North America.  We represent workers in a vast array of industries and sectors, and we are uniquely positioned to discuss the themes of Trade, Manufacturing, and Critical Supply Chains.  From mining to metals, from auto parts to transportation, from paper to education, from health care to pharmaceuticals, our members are employed across the entire economy.  They know first-hand the impact of trade and supply chains, not only as the producers of thousands of products, but as users as well.

COVID-19 may be a catalyst for today’s conversation, but our union has long known that without a strong, globally competitive manufacturing base, our members and communities are less secure, less resilient, and are at an increased threat to future health and economic crisis.

I will focus my comments on a number of issues, but at the heart of the testimony is recognition that there is rising demand for an industrial or manufacturing plan for this country and that the time for such a plan is well overdue. This subcommittee is uniquely positioned to be a guiding star in this effort.

The Department of Commerce estimates that exports of manufactured goods directly support more than 6 million U.S. manufacturing jobs currently, and millions more indirectly. Increasing manufacturing exports in a strategic manner requires policies that will encourage reshoring and trade policies, which cannot just be about the WTO rules on prohibited subsidies and dumping, but also international conventions on workers’ rights, public health, human rights,...

Dear Sisters and Brothers, needless to say that we have all suffered through some very difficult times in the last 6 months or so.  I hope this message finds you and your families safe and healthy. As I am sure you are all aware there have been boats laid up and some of our members laid off.  There also has been some bumping from one boat to another which has caused a bit of confusion only because our decreases in forces language has not been used much and there is some debate as to the intent. We are working through these issues with the company the union President The International Staff rep. the menbers involved and myself. I am sure if we all hang in there we will get through this. Our land based local Sisco Hilti is also exoeriancing short work weeks and other issues. We have also had to postpone our negotiations due to two positive covid 19 tests in our office. It has caused us to close down the Sub 1 office and to quarantine those that were exposed. So far there are only the two positives. We will reschedule negotiations for Sisco as soon as we can. I wanted you to know the Union is also working on lobbying our represenatives in the Congress to continue and increase help through emotional and financial support throughout this pandemic.  Workers seem to always be the last thought of some of our represenatives and we want to make sure they dont forget about us. We are also still working on the SPT pension issue for Interlakes Leasing 3. Again we hope everyone is safe and healthy. Wear your mask ,wash your hands and practice social distancing where you can and hopefully we can put this all behind us soon. Any questions please call me at 440-225-7752 or Jamie Walker.  Be safe in solidarity Tom Z
