We are the United Steelworkers, North America’s largest industrial union. We’re 1.2 million members and retirees strong in the United States, Canada and the Caribbean. We proudly represent men and women who work in nearly every industry there is.
A few members will be called back to work for Monday June 22nd, roughly 6-10. Make sure that you keep an eye out on your email and phone. The company said they plan to keep this staffing level until July 6th with the exception of adding a few people where issues may arise. As of now, on July 6th the company will be looking to add more members back on all shifts.
The thermal body camera has been installed so now everyone will have their temperature read prior to entering the facility. After speaking with H&S the warning light and siren will go off when you read over the limit of 100.4 degrees. This thermal camera is accurate within .3 degrees. The Union and company continue to work together through this pandemic to help ensure the safety of our members.
Scheduling seems to be a bit of a mess lately! That has to do with sales and production planning getting signals crossed!! The company does not know what one day to the next brings! Most of what you see scheduled should be this way till shutdown but don’t hold your breath!!
Discipline is, again, at an all time high! Present management wants to boost moral and I’m guessing this is their way? Maybe it’s the new walkway? “The Green Mile”? More info on the website under the Heath & Safety Tab from WSIB rep, Geoff Oberfrank.
For those with less than 5 years service, the company will be forcing some to work through the shutdown on various utility jobs and confined space. They require about 13-15 people each week. There is a sign up sheet on the main board.
I’ll be on vacation next week. If you have any issues, John will be available as well as the Chief Stewards. If it’s an emergency, please contact us all!!
Although we are in the midst of the final stage of reopening Indiana, we are still experiencing COVID-19 cases within the plant. Most recently, a contractor in Iron Producing was confirmed to be positive. Management is contacting those who may have been in close contact, which is defined as less than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes per the CDC. If you believe you have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, you may get tested by setting up an appointment at one of the local testing sites and your results may be read online. Please visit https://www.coronavirus.in.gov/2524.htmor call 1-888-634-1116 to schedule a visit. There are no requirements for testing. While this test is free, you may be asked to provide your insurance card. The reopening of our state has allowed some to drop their guard when it comes to this virus. We encourage you to remain diligent to protect yourselves, your family and your co-workers by wearing a mask or face covering, social distancing by 6 feet or more and utilizing proper hygiene and handwashing procedures every day. Together we can keep each other safe.
As more Employees are called back from involuntary layoff, the plant wide labor pool numbers have been greatly reduced. Next week, we will begin to see ABM housekeeping contractors back in our plant to ensure we have enough people to keep cleaning procedures on track. Even though a letter of understanding outlined in our BLA does not allow the use of non-core contractors if Union Members are laid off, we are allowing janitorial duties to be performed as long as it is by choice of an affected Member. By allowing a preference for furloughed Employees, those at high risk for contracting COVID-19 will be able to remain off of work for a longer period of time. We have reserved the right to enforce the non-core letter if necessary.
Have a safe and happy Juneteenth and Father’s Day weekend.
In Solidarity, Pete Trinidad Sr. USW Local 6787 President
I, like most of my coworkers are wondering what is going on with pathway that you have dubbed the green mile.
First, do you know that the green mile is a Steven King story about an inmate on death row. And the last walk he will take to the electric chair is called the green mile.
Although this nickname is kind of fitting as you are pushing your employees into an unsafe and dangerous position.
You used industrial Machine paint on the floor. All this will do is make the floor more of a slipping hazard.
If this walkway gets wet or oil etc. spilled on it this will make this path expedentially more dangerous.
I have spoken to all of my supervisors and some senior management about the Ontario law about doing this and have been assured that the path will be treated with a non slip coating.
I saw on the weekend that the crosswalk by 37 frame was treated with this coating and it looks like it's not going to work.
My question is was this just a photo op to show the higher management that you are doing something or is this path going to be finished properly? Why are you pushing employees into an unsafe situation?
I think this whole walkway was just an exercise in futility
I start this update with a somber heart. If you are not aware,Brother Jim Eardley passed away last Thursday and was laid to rest yesterday. If any of you had the opportunityto work around Jim,I’m sure you have a storyto tell about the experience. He was a life long member of the union,an amazingfriend, co-worker andmore importantlyHusband, Father, and Grandfather. He will be greatly missed by us all.
The Company has made the decision to extend the furlough until the 20th of Julyfor surface and the 26th of Julyfor the underground employees. That being said the company will begin contacting the current volunteerstomorrow, to see if they would like to extend in to July...
