US company Centrus Energy Corp has signed a three-year contract with the Department of Energy (DOE) to deploy a cascade of centrifuges to demonstrate production of high-assay, low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel for advanced reactors.

The Department of Energy says an independent company will test a six mile radius around the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant. Over the summer trace amounts of enriched uranium were found at a nearby school.

Many living around the plant welcome the third party testing of the area, saying it will give more credibility to the DOE's testing of the area.
