On February 8th and 9th 2017, the 8th National Convention of Local 1976 was held in Montreal’s scenic Old Port. This important event takes place every three years, and this year’s convention was a resounding success!
The convention followed two days of education sessions, during which over 40 participants attended courses given by Lisa Cook, Karl McBurnie, Dany Maltais, Pierre Piedalue and Maude Raiche.
In his opening remarks to the convention delegates, President Steven Hadden paid an emotional homage to Ron Marleau, a dear friend of the Local who passed away this past December. All in attendance were very moved by the tribute, and later resolved to set up a bursary in Ron’s name to help students enrolled in the “Gender Equality and Social Justice” program at Nipissing University.
Throughout the convention, President Hadden and others stressed the importance of succession planning within the Local. Getting younger members involved in the movement will be one of the most important issues facing the union over the coming years, and every delegate was encouraged to find new ways of addressing it.
Among the 35 delegates in attendance were 13 new delegates, who brought fresh perspectives to the organization. In all, seven new resolutions were passed, demanding stronger legislation to protect Canadian workers, as well as showing support for campaigns such as Hang up on Abuse (www.hanguponabuse.ca) and Stop the Killing – Enforce the Law (www.stopthekilling.ca).
In addition to the business of the Union, the assembly also had the opportunity to hear speeches given by Alain Croteau (Director, District 5), Mark Rowlinson (Executive Assistant to the National Director), Jeremy Salter (Director of Affiliate and Partner Relations at Union Savings), Carol Landry (International Vice President At Large), Marty Warren (Director, District 6), and Nancy Hutchison (Head of the Department of Health, Safety and Environment), who gave an impassioned presentation about the 1992 Westray mine disaster and the ongoing fight to stop workplace deaths. USW International President Leo Gerard was unable to attend the convention in person, but sent a short video message to be viewed during the event.
By all accounts, the delegates left Montreal armed with knowledge and a strong sense of solidarity, ready to bring new tools to their members. In his closing remarks, President Hadden acknowledged the exceptional work that the delegates do, and that the union would not function without their dedication.

Les 8 et 9 février, 2017, la Section locale 1976 a tenu leur 8e congrès national, dans le Vieux Port de Montréal. Cet évènement prend lieu à chaque 3 ans, et la convention cette année a été un grand succès!
Le congrès a eu lieu après deux jours de formation, dans lequel plus de 40 participants ont assisté aux cours donnés par Lisa Cook, Karl McBurnie, Dany Maltais, Pierre Piedalue et Maude Raiche.
Dans son discours d’introduction aux délégués de la convention, le Président Steven Hadden a rendu hommage de façon émouvante à Ron Marleau, un ami très cher à la Section locale qui est décédé au mois de décembre. Les participants étaient très touchés, et ont ensuite résolu de créer une bourse au nom de Ron, pour aider des étudiants inscrits dans le programme de “Gender Equality and Social Justice” à l’université de Nipissing.
Au cours du congrès, le Président Hadden, parmi d’autres, a souligné l’importance de la succession dans la Section locale. Il sera primordial d’engager les jeunes gens dans le syndicat au cours des prochaines années, et tous les délégués étaient convoqués de trouver de nouvelles façons d’agir à ce sujet.
Parmi les 35 délégués, on y retrouvait 13 nouveaux, qui ont apporté des nouvelles perspectives à l’assemblé. En tout, sept nouvelles résolutions ont été adoptées, exigeant des lois plus fortes pour protéger les travailleurs canadiens, en plus que donner leur soutien aux campagnes Je raccroche. Non aux abus! (www.jeraccroche.ca) et Mettons fin au carnage – appliquons la loi (www.appliquezlaloi.ca).
En plus des affaires du syndicat, l’assemblé a eu l’opportunité d’écouter des présentations données par Alain Croteau (directeur, District 5), Mark Rowlinson (Adjoint au Directeur National), Jeremy Salter (directeur des partenariats et des relations avec les affiliés à Union Savings), Carol Landry (Vice-Présidente Internationale), Marty Warren (directeur, District 6), et Nancy Hutchison (Chef de service, département de Santé, sécurité et environnement), qui a donné un discours passionné sur le désastre à la mine Westray en 1992, et la lutte continuelle contre la perte de vie aux lieux de travail. Le président international du Syndicat des Métallos, Leo Gerard ne pouvait pas assister à la convention en personne, mais il a envoyé un court message vidéo à être présenté durant l’évènement.
De toute évidence, les délégués sont partis de Montréal avec des nouvelles connaissances et un fort sentiment de solidarité, prêt à apporter des nouveaux outils à leurs membres. Dans son discours de fermeture, le Président Hadden a reconnu le travail exceptionnel des délégués, et que le syndicat ne pourrait pas fonctionner sans leur dévouement.
