Nippon-USSteel

We are well aware that there are many questions that remain unanswered. What little we are able to report we will.

As many are aware we have been receiving updates through the USW International on what their basic understanding of the sale of USSteel assets, to Nippon Steel. But we are also aware that very little was shared with the USW on this matter.

The USW would not back the sale of USSteel assets to Nippon. The USW felt that USSteel had the funding and ability to remain a stand-alone company. They felt that if a sale was going to commence that it would be better that Clevland Cliffs purchase the assets, but again, felt that no sale to any competitor was necessary.

With that position the parties decided that they would pursue a purchase agreement without the USW blessing.

This led to an National Security Agreement (NSA) with the United States of America government.

But the USW recognizes that the sale to Nippon Steel, through Nippon Steel North America, is final and binding. With that, the USW continues to press for information of the particulars of the deal. This has been done through multiple information requests to the new company.

As more information is released to us, or all of us, we will make that available. But at this point, without a public release of the document, with written terms of the U.S. Government and Nippon stating otherwise, we are to assume that the provisions of our contract stay in place as that is what has been stated by the new company as well as mandated by the contract itself.

Locally here at 1299 we have been busy contacting various other plant Locals and their leadership to ascertain what they may know. That information was shared at the General meeting. As that information can not be verified at this moment we cannot publicize it here. But we can report that we did get reports back of a possible $9.3B of the promised approx. $11B in new investment. This being at the Fairfield, Gary, the Mines and the Mon-Valley Edgar Thomson plant as well as at the Big River Steel facility.

Here at GLW we have not been able to get information of much new cap ex. outside of what we have known. That being investments in the plant super structure as well as the previously announced improvements at the various other mills in GLW.

We, the Local 1299 leadership, have been given the opportunity to meet with representatives of our new company and this is scheduled for July 7th. We will make sure that we convey that GLW is an excellent facility with plenty of opportunity for further investment. We have the infrastructure in place, the manufacturing base to service the facility as well as s skilled workforce in the area ready to be tapped for any expansion of the GLW works facility.

Anything we get as definitive commitments, from that meeting, or other sources that are verified we will share with our members.

As a whole, we need to put our best foot forward while staying positive and together during this process so that we may take advantage of any opportunity that presents itself for the long-term viability of GLW and our newly structured company. We have all been blessed with a good paying career here at GLW and it is our responsibility to ensure that opportunity is there for the long term and future generations. We know that GLW has the best workforce in the USSteel family and we need to now show that to the new leadership.

We also are very aware there is lots of speculation, rumor and quite honestly fear out there amongst us. We know there are some who will try to project that they are in the know somehow and put out whatever information they hear without verifying its legitimacy. Others still will try to utilize this opportunity to tear down or attempt to affix speculative blame for what they see as folly. We ask, as it is in our best interests, to please try to stay focused on your job during this period as there is a lot of distractions out there in a rush to be first with information. And please know that your Local will make sure that we only report what we know to be fact as soon as we can.
