Sept. 28: Bargaining Team Makes Progress, Health Care Proposal Would Not Include Employee-Paid Premiums

Our USW bargaining committee met with Cliffs representatives this week in Pittsburgh and made significant progress toward finalizing a new agreement with the company. Our current agreement is scheduled to expire on Oct. 1.

Thanks to your strength and solidarity and the hard work of our committee members, we have pushed the company off of its initial demands that active employees begin paying monthly health care premiums. We expect to reach an agreement that would keep our out-of-pocket health care costs affordable and maintain our high-quality coverage.

We still have work to do with the company to ensure that we get the wages we deserve after three years without an increase, and we continue to exchange proposals on important issues such as overtime, pensions, and retiree health care, among others.

Remember, Things Can Change Quickly

We intend to continue bargaining in good faith with the company over the weekend and hope to reach an agreement before expiration. Don’t forget, though, that bargaining sometimes can be unpredictable and things can change very quickly – so please continue to be prepared as our expiration date approaches.

Remain vigilant, continue to work safely, and stay in touch with your CAT coordinators over the weekend for the latest information from the bargaining committee.
