Women of Steel is the activist arm of the United Steelworkers, creating opportunities for women to learn, participate and lead through education, activism and service. At Local 983, we are working to strengthen participation and take the formal steps needed to establish our Local Union Women’s Committee.

EDUCATION
Build knowledge and confidence
Union education can help members better understand union structure, communication, organizing, bargaining, grievances, workplace safety and leadership. Learning together prepares more women to take an active role in Local 983.

Turn participation into power
Women of Steel encourages members to speak up, organize, advocate for dignity and equality, and strengthen involvement in the union and workplace. Every member can contribute experience, ideas and energy.

Strengthen our union and community
Service connects union values with practical support. Women of Steel participation can build solidarity through member support, community involvement and projects shaped by local needs.

What is Women of Steel?
Women of Steel creates opportunities for women to learn, participate, mentor one another and develop as union activists and leaders. All female-identifying USW members are considered Women of Steel, regardless of their union position or the industry or service in which they work.
You do not need to already be an officer, steward or committee person to participate. Women of Steel is a place to begin, grow, connect with union sisters and help shape a stronger union.
LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT
Building the next generation of union leaders
Leadership grows through education, practice, encouragement and connection. Women of Steel can help members build experience in communication, mentoring, organizing, bargaining, grievance knowledge and other areas of union responsibility.

DIGNITY AT WORK
Health, safety and equality at work
Women of Steel helps bring women’s workplace concerns forward and supports collective action for safer, more respectful workplaces. Areas of focus can include appropriate personal protective equipment, hazards affecting women, discrimination and harassment, equal treatment and opportunity, workplace dignity and advocacy.

SOLIDARITY IN ACTION
Organizing, activism and community service
Women of Steel participation can strengthen organizing, workplace advocacy, community involvement, service and overall Local 983 member participation. Networking and mentoring help newer activists find support while experienced members share knowledge and encourage others to step forward.

LOCAL 983
Women of Steel at Local 983
Local 983 is working to strengthen Women of Steel participation and establish its Local Union Women’s Committee. No formal Local 983 Women’s Committee leadership or meeting schedule has been established yet. The first steps are connecting interested members, learning what matters to them and building a supportive foundation for participation.
