USW Local 1000 First Annual WOS Scholarship Review

The Women of Steel Local 1000 Committee of Corning, NY is partnering with Local 1000 Next Gen Committee to implement our first annual Scholarship Program for a female recipient of the NY/PA area who exhibits strong leadership and community activism. The WOS Local 1000 Female Scholarship will be awarded in the amount of $1,000 to one selected recipient who meets and fulfills the requirement list below.
This program will require an essay and panel interview before final selection. The panel interview will consist of 3-5 Union Members from Local 1000 & The Southern Tier Labor Chapter. The Women of Steel Female Scholarship application deadline for the Fall 2025 Semester is April 3, 2025.
Program Requirements:
· Female, or identities as Female
· High School Senior
· Resident of the Twin Tiers area of NY/PA
· Exhibits Leadership Skills
· Strong Community Activism
· 2.3 GPA or higher
· Enrollment in College or Skilled-Trade Program or Certification Process
Interested applicants must fill out the standard scholarship application, and compose a 250–350-word essay, as well as provide a detailed list describing their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, volunteer/fundraising efforts, activism within their community, and any additional accomplishments that display personal qualities as a young female leader.
On Friday April 11th our panel began and completed the selection process for the applicants that we received. We had an amazing response with 44 applicants to review. This was an amazing outcome that was beyond our expectations. Our interview panel consisted of Maggie Rex from the Southern Tier Labor Council (Rochester, NY), Jamie Quick USW Local 1000 Next Gen Vice Chair (Corning, NY), Kim Kephart USW Local 1000 Next Gen Chair and Regional Chair of the Southern Tier District 4 (Woodhull, NY), and Deanna Cavanaugh USW Local 1000 WOS Chair (Troupesburg, NY). Seven females were selected to proceed forward to the interview process that will be completed May 9th and 12th via zoom and phone interviews. We look forward to building this program into an annual opportunity for our communities and young females going into the trade workforces.
