Our union held a fundraising rummage sale at the Duluth Labor Temple on Sept. 29.  We raised money for a United Way program through which our union buys holiday presents for struggling families.

In September I went to the Charley Richardson Educational Institute.  This was my second year in the program, and the theme was “Building Your Skills as a Union Leader.”

United Steelworkers Local 9460 is hosting a fundraising rummage sale on September 29.  For the past several weeks, our members and friends have dropped off a bunch of donated clothing, household wares, toys and other misc. items that we plan to sell.  The rummage sale will be in Hall B of the basement of the Duluth Labor Temple (2002 London Road).

This week the U.S. Senate is holding hearings on Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. This is the first step in the Senate’s process of deciding whether or not Kavanaugh should ultimately serve as a Supreme Court Justice. While the issues covered in the hearing are wide-ranging, in the Steelworkers our focus is on the workplace implications of past and future Supreme Court decisions that aren’t often part of the news cycle. 

Across the Iron Range, steelworkers and their families rallied together Thursday to show they are united in their fight for a fair contract.

Hundreds of people gathered for the three rallies on the Iron Range.  At 3 pm, there were rallies outside of Minorca Mine in Virginia, organized by Local 6115, and near the Local 2660 union hall in Keewatin. 

John Dickinson, Grievance Chairman for Local 6115, said, "We're waiting for a fair contract. We don't want to take concessions when the company is making money like they are."

As President Donald Trump and corporate media outlets on Friday enthusiastically touted new GDP figures showing that the U.S. economy grew by 4.1 percent in the second quarter of 2018, many economists and progressive commentators were quick to counter the glowing headlines by pointing out that corporations and the rich are feasting on most of the growth while most workers see their wages fall.
