About USW Local 983

USW Local 983 is part of the United Steelworkers, one of North America’s largest and most diverse labor Unions, and proudly serves within USW District 9. Together, we are part of a broader labor movement committed to protecting working people, strengthening workplace rights, and ensuring that Union members have a meaningful voice on the job.

The United Steelworkers represents workers across a wide range of industries throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. While our industries and workplaces may differ, our foundation is the same: solidarity, collective action, safety, dignity, and respect for working people.

Through the USW, Local 983 members are connected to the resources, experience, training, and support of an International Union while maintaining strong representation at the local level.

USW District 9

Local 983 is part of USW District 9, which serves Steelworker locals throughout the southeastern United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

District 9 provides Local 983 and other affiliated locals with support in areas such as collective bargaining, grievance handling, arbitration, organizing, education, health and safety, legislative action, and leadership development.

Our connection to District 9 also gives Local 983 members opportunities to participate in conferences, training programs, committees, and other activities that bring Steelworkers together from across the district.

USW Local 983

USW Local 983 proudly represents the Union workforce at Clearwater Paper’s Augusta, Georgia mill.

Our local is responsible for representing members in the workplace, enforcing our collective bargaining agreement, addressing grievances, protecting contractual rights, advocating for safe working conditions, and ensuring that employees have representation when workplace issues arise.

But a strong Local Union is about more than handling grievances.

Local 983 is working to build a more informed, engaged, and connected membership. That means improving communication, providing members with access to Union information and resources, strengthening steward and representative training, encouraging participation, and creating more opportunities for members to have a voice in the direction of their Union.

Representation That Starts With the Membership

The strength of Local 983 comes from its members.

Our elected and appointed representatives serve the membership, but every member has a role in building and maintaining a strong Union. Attending membership meetings, staying informed, asking questions, participating in committees, reporting workplace concerns, voting, and supporting one another all contribute to our collective strength.

Local 983 believes members should understand not only what their Union is doing, but also how their Union works and how they can participate in it.

Safety, Rights and Respect

Every member deserves to work in an environment where safety concerns are taken seriously, contractual rights are respected, and employees are treated with dignity.

Local 983 works with our members, safety representatives, stewards, committee persons, USW representatives, and other Union resources to identify concerns and advocate for meaningful solutions.

When issues cannot be resolved informally, our collective bargaining agreement provides processes through which the Union can challenge decisions and protect the rights of the membership.

Connected Beyond Our Mill

Being a member of Local 983 also means being part of something larger.

Through USW District 9 and the United Steelworkers, our members are connected to Steelworkers throughout the region and across North America who face many of the same workplace challenges and share many of the same goals.

That connection gives our local greater resources, broader experience, and a stronger collective voice.
