"In the early morning hours of May 9, 2002, a huge explosion ripped through the Westray coal mine in Pictou County, Nova Scotia.  In a matter of seconds, the lives of 26 miners were extinguished.  It marked one of the worst workplace disasters in Canada in generations" – usw.ca

President Nick Larochelle, Health & Safety Chair Malcolm Mills, Health & Safety Committe Recording Secretary Joe Guido and WSIB Representative Selina Clement-Mikkola travelled to Pictou County to attend the 30th Anniversary of the Westray mining disaster.  The event was very well attended by USW dignitaries, members of the community and families of those who lost their lives in the mine.
