RED BOOK UPDATE: Bargaining was tough today. Essentia continues to demand "flexibility" on a host of things that would negatively effect our members. They are pushing for "sole discretion" on how you will be assigned and scheduled. And they are also still failing to provide us with requested information that we need for drafting our proposals.

This week your committee kicked off negotiations with non-economic proposals that focus on patient and worker safety, retention, and preventing burn-out. Essentia's initial proposal was asking for greater flexibility from you. Your committee is preparing their counterproposals which they will present next week. Stay tuned for more info. Solidarity!

RED BOOK: You can help with negotiations! We need your information! Send us job offer/postings that you/others have received to leave or compete with Essentia. Email the info to

RED BOOK UPDATE: The Union Negotiating Committee is prepping today. Negotiations with Essentia start tomorrow. We want to thank all of our members for turning out at our recent meetings, filling out their surveys and signing up to be part of the WIN (Workers' Information Network).

Deanna Hughes has resigned as our union president. In situations where a president resigns before the end of their term, the vice president automatically becomes the president for the remainder of that term. So that means Tuan Vu is now our new president.

However, this leaves the role of vice president vacant. As last night's membership meeting we voted to put out a call for any of our members in good standing who are interested in applying for this role to fill out an application. Our Executive Board will then chose someone from the list of applicants to become the vice president. The deadline for applying is June 19. The Executive Board will make it's decision on June 20.

There is going to be a unit meeting for our members who work at Essentia Health and are represented by the Red Book contract. The Red Book cover technical workers. The meeting will be on May 10 at 5:30pm. We will be meeting in Hall A in the basement of the Duluth Labor Temple. The purpose of the meeting is the discuss the upcoming contract negotiations for the Red Book.

Below is a list of conferences and trainings that the United Steelworkers are hosting that are available for our members.  Contact the office if you have any questions about any of them.

  • USW Healthcare Workers Conference:  This conference will be held in Pittsburg.  It will be from July 22-28 (this includes travel time to and from the conference).  The local has voted to send up to 5 members.  Let the office know if you are interested by June 16.
