Message from your President October 21, 2020

Good day Brothers, Sisters and Friends of Steel.

Please share this story. David Fifi was a Boilermaker and  Ironworker and never returned home safely. He died 2008 working at Vale Inco ESP Project.

David died from exposure to toxic chemicals as per Dr Peter Markesteyn, not natural causes as per MB Coroner. This was Gross Negligence.

This story is bigger than the Westray Disaster.

Also if you google LILA FIFI, newspaper articles will come up concerning this matter.

Davids Story has been on Manitoba Legislative floor May 2017 and Oct 2018.

On Saturday, June 23rd, 2018 USW Local 6166 held the annual King Miner Competition at the T.R.C.C. Parking Lot. 16 Competitors battled for the top prize of $2000.00, one-of-a-kind King Miner Ring, created by Don Johnson Jewelers, and the trophy and title of 2018 Ming Miner.

After 11 grueling events, which include Hand Mucking, Hose mending, and crib building, Josh Forest won the title of 2018 King Miner for the second year in a row. Jason Stykalo came in second, Scott Kennedy third, and Gord Whalen 4th.

The 9th Annual USW Hockey Tournament was held March 28th, 2018 to April 6th, 2018.

After a long battle to the Steelworkers Cup, the T1 Timberdogs came out on top, defeating the City Slickers 7 to 6 after a back and forth game, which ended in Overtime. In the 3rd place game, the T1 Oilers defeated the Birchtree Hooligans 9 to 5. And in the consolation game, The Refinery Heat defeated the Smelter Rats, 7 to 3.

USW 6166 would like to thank long time activist, and new retiree, Torrance Sukhbir for his time and effort in setting up and running the tournament.

USW 6166 held elections on April 9th, 2018 and the following are the results:

This summer at United Steelworkers Local 6166 I learned a variety of things from how to properly use a photocopier, to how much unions benefit the workers they represent. Walking into the union hall for the first time this summer, I wasn't sure what was in store for me other than utilizing and enhancing simple skills such as photocopying, organizing, cleaning, so mundane everyday tasks. But coming out of the hall for the last time this summer I left with a clearer and greater appreciation for the hard work union workers do for the men and women they represent. The people I met this summer such as Gord Medwid the Vice President of Local 6166 was one of the big influencers in the stories I heard this summer. Personally, he showed me understanding of past battles unions have fought such as the infamous Westray accident that left many families torn apart; he also taught the other students as well as myself the importance of these battles and what they did for the working person with the well-deserved passion he included in each story. The rest of the union workers also taught the other students and the importance of many things in regards to unions, such as knowing our four rights for our safety, something because of how many times we were asked to recite them, will never be forgotten no matter how many times we try.
